KISUMU
PORT

This project draws inspiration from the vernacular usage of corrugated metal sheets that can be easily bent and installed. By designing this drone port, the residents of Kisumu will have access to flexible meeting spaces, a drone cage, a digital fabrication lab, amphitheater and a drone port. This new transportation typology not only optimizes deliveries from the port, but it also allows rural farmers to use drones to perform agricultural management practices. Besides being a logistical hub, the port becomes a community node by bringing together urban and rural young talent with local artisans and farmers to co-work and learn the essential skills to operate a drone and digital fabrication machines.

Transnational Hub

Kisumu is located at the NE corner of Lake Victoria, which is the water boundary between Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi. Known as a bustling port city, Kisumu is also where major interstates meet, making Kisumu a connectivity hub nationally and internationally.

Urban Rural Midpoint

The site was purposely selected at the outskirts of the city to optimize drone delivery time between urban and rural landscapes. Thus, optimizing the route for drone delivery.

Triangulation Exploration

After researching the local materials, corrugated metal roofing sheets became the main inspiration behind the triangulated form. Through a series of origami models and color overlays, the folding strategy and dimension of the space was determined.
